Local Government Officials Welcome Governmental Accounting Training from Legislative Auditor

A packed house of local government officials attended the Legislative Auditor’s first offering of a new training and certification program specifically designed to help Louisiana’s local government officials and their staffs improve services and decrease audit and operation costs.

Reviews written to the state auditor in response to the new Center for Local Government Excellence training classes noted:

“This training specific to the laws of Louisiana has been priceless. The information is directly relevant to local government and the presenters are true experts on the subject matter.”

“Thanks for offering an opportunity for training in governmental accounting.”

“A great course that instructs ‘How to do it right’ instead of ‘How it has been done wrong.’”

“All state and parish agencies and commissions need to attend these workshops.”

The initial classes offered this past week to St. Tammany Parish government officials are intended to be the first in an anticipated series of training offerings that eventually would assist local government statewide in decreasing both audit costs paid and overall operating costs, as employees become more efficient.

At the introductory two-day workshop in Covington, instructors from the Legislative Auditor’s office introduced the basics of internal control, accounting and financial reporting for local governments. Classes also delivered helpful instruction on legal issues that local governments and their staffs often encounter.

“We are in these state and local government agencies every day, and we are hearing the call from our partners there,” said Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera. “We want to help give these dedicated employees the tools to deliver better services to our citizens and improve the quality of local government audits.”

Another introductory two-day training session will be held for St. Tammany Parish government officials and their staffs on December 15-16 at the Slidell City Auditorium. See our brochure below to learn more. The Legislative Auditor is hoping to offer more training classes in 2016.
