Village of Dodson Missing $1,512 in Cash; Commits to Depositing Cash Daily Instead of Using Safe

A financial audit of the Village of Dodson in Winn Parish found that village employees were not depositing cash in the bank daily and money was stolen from village funds.

The audit further found that the Village appeared to have violated the Louisiana Constitution’s general prohibition on donating public funds when it purchased $449 in funeral arrangements and flowers.

Independent CPA Shanna Jones noted the two findings in the financial audit covering Dodson’s fiscal year ending June 30, 2015.

The audit report notes that the Village was not making daily cash deposits into its bank account, believing that keeping the money in a safe would be a sufficient control. Approximately $1,512.24 in cash was not recovered and was not covered by the village’s insurance.

Village management says it will now make daily deposits as practical in compliance with Louisiana state law, and it acknowledges responsibility not to spend public funds on prohibited activities such as flower arrangements.

The state auditor has referred the findings to the Winn Parish District Attorney.
