"This office has opined that awards in the nature of certificates, pins, plaques, trophies and the like, of moderate cost , are acceptable expenditures of public funds for recognition of public employees. AG Op. No. 95-0210; AG Op. No. 92-0737; AG Op. No. 85-0700; and AG Op. No. 76-1766. Thus, it is our opinion that such moderately priced awards for recognition of long term service, or outstanding service to a fire department, would be permissible."
