The volunteer fire department and/or the board member should seek an ethics advisory opinion prior to entering into any contract with any immediate family members of the board member. Instructions for submission of an ethics advisory opinion can be found on the Board of Ethics’ website, www.ethics.la.gov.

Generally, immediate family members of a board member of a volunteer fire department would be prohibited from contracting with the volunteer fire department under the Code of Governmental Ethics. However, there are various exceptions that might apply, but they are fact specific. The Board of Ethics is the proper party to assist in determining whether any specific contract would violate the provisions of the Code of Governmental Ethics.
