Answer

R.S. 33:2214.1, which applies to municipalities with a population of twelve thousand to two hundred fifty thousand (12K-250K), provides that policeman shall receive, in addition to any compensation owed under current laws (FLSA and State wage/overtime laws) and pay plans, additional compensation at a rate of one time their usual salary when they work on any of the following holidays:

    · Christmas,

    · New Year’s Day,

    · July 4, and

    · Labor day,

    · and/or any other two state legal holidays to be selected and designated by the local governing authority.

This means that an officer is required to receive two times their regular pay (two and a half times their regular pay if working overtime) for working on one of these holidays.

Local governing authorities are authorized to grant additional holidays, provided that the officer does not receive less pay than that required for the holidays listed above.

Municipalities which have a population of less than twelve thousand should ensure that payment to officers working holidays complies with State and Federal laws, pay plans, and any formal policies of the municipality.
