Former Mamou Employee Charged with Dismantling Town Property, Selling Brass as Scrap

A former employee of the Evangeline Parish town of Mamou allegedly dismantled water valves and meters from the town and sold the brass casings as scrap, according to an audit report released Monday by Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera’s office.

The audit, done for the state auditor by Kolder, Champagne, Slaven, & Co., LLC, said general laborer Scott Rickey McGee dismantled the valves and meters over the Thanksgiving 2014 holiday and sold the brass from them as scrap. At that time, McGee was on call and had unsupervised access to the Mamou City Barn, where the parts were located. Auditors said the valves and meters were valued at a total of $9,134.

According to the office of 13th Judicial District Attorney Trent Brignac, McGee has a trial date set for October. He was formally charged in February.

The town discovered the theft during a routine inventory check. McGee was immediately terminated, and the town notified the district attorney and law enforcement. No restitution has been made, but $2,158 worth of items were recovered during the investigation. Mamou officials said in their corrective action plan, “In the future, in addition to routine inventory checks, additional verification will be performed immediately following employees’ unsupervised access to the Mamou City Barn.”

Auditors also cited the town itself for not reporting the theft to the Legislative Auditor when it was discovered. Town officials said they were unaware of this requirement and submitted a letter of notification on May 18.
